The Church’s Purpose: Equipping Saints, Maturing the Body, and the Ministry of Reconciliation
And He gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11-13
Please Note The unique role of the apostles (those who saw the risen Christ and were personally commissioned by Him) and prophets (who laid the foundation of the church through direct revelation) has passed. What remains for ongoing church leadership are the evangelists, pastors, and teachers, in line with what Paul later established through elders and overseers in the early church.
Biblical Basis:
1. Apostles and Prophets – Foundational Roles
Ephesians 2:20 – The Church is “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.” These roles were foundational—once the foundation is laid, it’s not repeated. Apostles were eyewitnesses of Christ (Acts 1:21–22), and Paul referred to himself as the last of them (1 Corinthians 15:8–9).
2. Ongoing Roles: Evangelists, Pastors, Teachers
These roles are not foundational but functional and continuing. Evangelists (like Philip in Acts 21:8) share the gospel widely. Pastors (Greek: poimen, meaning shepherd) care for and oversee local flocks. Teachers instruct and ground believers in sound doctrine (Titus 1:9).
3. Elders and Overseers
Paul instructed churches to appoint elders (presbyteros) and overseers (episkopos) in every city (Titus 1:5; Acts 14:23). In practice, pastors/elders/overseers are overlapping terms for mature spiritual leaders (1 Peter 5:1–4).
Qualifications for elders are outlined in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1.
What Is the Purpose of the Church?
If you are attending church each week, what is the purpose? For this we don't have to guess the bible tells us the function and purpose of the Church, Jesus Christ created is as laid out for us in Ephesians 4:12
[12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.]
So we learn the role of the church is to also equip you the saints for the work of ministry and help you grow and mature into the image of Christ who is the head of the Church.
1. Equipping the Saints for Ministry
The leaders God gives—apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers—are tasked with preparing all believers to serve. This means:
- Help Training followers of Christ to live out their faith daily.
- Empowering every member to share the gospel and serve others.
- Encouraging spiritual gifts and ministry in practical ways as led by the Holy Spirit
- Grown in unity and love for one another (3rd commandment, to love one another as I have loved you. John 13.34)
- Relationship with God the Father through His Son Jesus Christ by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
2. Building Up and Maturing the Body of Christ
The church exists to help believers grow in their faith and character so they become mature followers, reflecting Christ’s character and love. This spiritual maturity:
- Strengthens personal faith
- Creates unity among believers.
- Helps the church withstand challenges and false teachings.
- Throwing off the old man , old ways and habits and to put on the New creation, Christ.
3. Advancing the Ministry of Reconciliation
As followers of Christ, the church carries the message of peace and reconciliation between God and mankind. We are called to:
- Share the good news that through Jesus, we are reconciled to God by the cross.
- Encourage Holy living with boldness and a sound mind
- Live as ambassadors of Christ’s peace and grace.
- Living as role models of Christ in the world.
Why This Matters for You
When you join a church that follows this biblical model, you’re not just attending a service — you’re joining a body of believers that are following the core principles of the bible. You want to grow and mature over the years in the ways of the Lord and get on with the good works that God has for you to walk in. To live with purpose, meaning and making an impact in your life and the life of others.
Rooted in Scripture & In Tradition
This model is drawn directly from the New Testament, where the early church functioned with clear roles and a shared mission. The Holy Spirit keeps the church alive and moving and so the emphasis is always on equipping every believer, who wants to grow in their call of God.
