Monday Fasting – A Church Devotion
At Garston Community Church, we set aside every Monday as a day of fasting — a time to humble ourselves before the Lord, draw closer to Him, and seek His guidance through prayer and spiritual discipline. Fasting is a biblical practice that strengthens our dependence on God and aligns our hearts with His will.
“But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” – Matthew 6:17–18
Jesus didn’t say if you fast, but when. Fasting is not reserved for a few; it's a normal part of Christian life. In the early church, believers fasted regularly as a way to seek God’s will and deepen their relationship with Him.
How to Start Fasting
If you're new to fasting, we encourage you to begin gently:
- Start by skipping one meal (breakfast or lunch) and drink water throughout the day.
- As you grow more comfortable, skip two meals and break your fast in the evening with a simple meal.
- Always combine fasting with prayer — fasting without prayer is just dieting.
- We understand that some people may have health conditions, so please use wisdom and consult your doctor if needed. The goal is not hardship, but a heart posture of worship and dependence on God.
Extended Fasts - Every few months, we extend our fasting time to 2 or 3 days, inviting the church to go deeper in prayer and spiritual renewal. These times are powerful moments of breakthrough and unity, where we seek God corporately for direction, healing, and revival.
“Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke… to share your bread with the hungry…” – Isaiah 58:6–7
