What is child dedication?
At Garston Community Church we offer a Child Dedication Service — a ceremony in which parents and carers commit before God and the congregation to raise their child in the knowledge and love of the Lord.
Dedication is not baptism. It is a pledge that “this child belongs to the Lord”. We trust that on reaching an age of understanding, each child will personally choose to follow Christ for themselves.
Is child dedication in the Bible?
It is a deeply biblical practice. Even our Lord Jesus Christ was dedicated according to Jewish custom. When the days of purification were complete, Mary and Joseph brought Him to the temple in Jerusalem to consecrate Him to the Lord, as the Law of Moses prescribed — “every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord” (Luke 2:22–23).
There they were met by Simeon, who took the child in his arms and blessed God, and by the prophetess Anna, who gave thanks and spoke of the child to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem (Luke 2:25–38). Just as His parents committed Him to God’s purposes from infancy, we dedicate our children in faith, trusting God to guide them and use them for His glory.
The clearest picture is Hannah, dedicating Samuel:
“O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant… then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life.”
Children are called a heritage from the Lord (Psalm 127:3), and when people brought little children to Jesus so that He might lay hands on them and pray, His own disciples tried to turn them away:
“But Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.’”
He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them (Mark 10:16). Dedication follows that pattern: bringing a child to Jesus and asking for His blessing on their life.
What happens during the service?
- Welcome and Scripture reading. We gather as a church family and read relevant passages — Psalm 127:3 and Mark 10:16 among them.
- Parental vows. Parents answer questions affirming their commitment to teach their child the Scriptures, to model Christlike character daily, and to pray for and protect their child’s faith.
- Congregational promise. The church body pledges to support and pray for the child and the family.
- Prayer and anointing with oil. The pastor prays over the child, anointing with oil as a symbol of consecration and blessing (James 5:14).
- Certificate and holy candle. Each family receives a Certificate of Dedication, and a holy candle — lit as a reminder of Christ as the Light of the World.
- Family blessing. The service concludes with a final blessing over the child and the family.
This is aimed at the church family and members, but may also be open to others who can demonstrate a commitment to the Lord.
The church family stands with you
A dedication is not something parents do alone at the front of a room. The congregation stands alongside, promising prayer, encouragement and guidance as the child grows.
That is why this happens in church, in front of everyone — the promise is made by a family and received by a family.
What parents are committing to
The vows are not a formality. This is what is being promised.
Read Bible stories together, pray together, and model a life devoted to Christ (Deuteronomy 6:6–7).
Attend services, children’s ministry, and classes designed to equip you for raising your child in faith.
Lean on the Holy Spirit for wisdom, and on the church community for support in challenges and celebrations.
