How Our Church Is Led: According to the Biblical Pattern
At Garston Community Church, we believe in leadership that aligns with the biblical model set out in the New Testament, particularly in the pastoral letters of Titus and 1 Timothy. These scriptures provide clear guidance on the character and qualifications of church leaders, known as elders or overseers.
Eldership According to Scripture
We believe that elders are to be men of proven character, called by God and affirmed by the church community. Their role includes spiritual oversight, teaching sound doctrine, pastoral care, and maintaining the integrity and unity of the church. Paul instructs both Timothy and Titus on the kind of leaders to appoint:
“An elder must be blameless, the husband of one wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient.” Titus 1:6
“Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach...”1 Timothy 3:2
Key Qualifications of Elders
From these passages, we understand that elders must be:
- Faithful in marriage – "husband of one wife" (not polygamous, sexually pure, and devoted).
- Above reproach – demonstrating integrity in their personal and public life.
- Able to teach – grounded in Scripture and able to instruct and correct lovingly.
- Self-controlled and disciplined – emotionally and spiritually mature.
- Hospitable – generous and welcoming to others.
- Not violent or quarrelsome – peaceable and gentle in leadership.
- Not lovers of money – trustworthy stewards with a heart for service, not personal gain.
Plural Leadership and Accountability
We operate under a plurality of elders, meaning leadership is shared among qualified men rather than centered on one individual. This ensures accountability, collective wisdom, and shared responsibility in shepherding the church. Our elders work in unity with the church Pastor, who is also considered an elder, and they serve alongside deacons, who assist in practical areas of ministry, as outlined in Acts 6 and 1 Timothy 3.
Our Commitment
As a church, we are committed to maintaining biblical integrity in leadership. We believe this is essential for healthy church life, spiritual growth, and the faithful proclamation of the Gospel. All our leaders are subject to safeguarding procedures and are DBS checked, ensuring a safe environment for all.
Oversight and Accountability
For spiritual oversight and accountability, Garston Community Church partners with Harvest Alliance. This partnership provides connection, encouragement, and guidance rooted in biblical values. Harvest Alliance describes their role this way: “We have a Core Team of trusted and experienced church leaders from around the world. They are called to support, encourage, and create an environment for churches and their leadership to flourish under the anointing and inspiration of the Holy Spirit.” Through this partnership, we remain aligned with Spirit-led leadership and global Kingdom vision.
