House Blessings

A house blessing is a time of prayer and declaration over a home, inviting the presence of God into every room and every part of family life.

“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” JOSHUA 24:15

This page is a resource for blessing your own home. God hears the prayer of His own people in their own house. Here is how to do it, and you can request a free blessing card — a card, a small cross and a written prayer, posted to you at no cost.

What is a house blessing?

In Scripture, the home is more than a building — it is a dwelling place for families, for peace, and for the presence of God. A house blessing is a time of prayer and declaration over a physical dwelling, inviting the presence of God into every room, and dedicating the household and everything in it to the Lord.

It is not a ritual and it is not superstition. It is believing prayer, offered over a place where a family lives.

What does the Bible say about blessing a home?

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you.”

NUMBERS 6:24–26

Jesus sent His disciples out with a blessing to speak over the homes they entered:

“As you enter the home, give it your greeting. If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it.”

MATTHEW 10:12–13

And the psalmist is plain about who does the building: “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labour in vain who build it.” (Psalm 127:1)

What happens during a house blessing?

A house blessing is simple, and there is nothing complicated to get right. It usually involves:

  • Scripture read aloud in thanksgiving and declaration.
  • Each room prayed over, anointed with oil, and consecrated to the Lord.
  • The household rededicating their home and their lives to the service of Christ.
  • Prayer for peace, protection, provision and unity.

It is a good thing to do in a new home, after a move, or simply when a household wants to put the Lord at the centre of it. The steps below are all you need.

How to pray through your own home

We would encourage every believer to pray through the rooms of their own house. There is no formula — but this is the pattern we use:

  1. Start with thanksgiving. Thank God for the home and for His provision of it.
  2. Read Scripture aloud in each room — Joshua 24:15, Psalm 127:1 and Numbers 6:24–26 are a good place to begin.
  3. Anoint the doorposts with oil if you wish, and pray over each room and what happens in it.
  4. Renounce anything that does not belong under the Lordship of Christ, and remove it.
  5. Dedicate the household — everyone in it, and everything in it — to God.
  6. Ask for peace, protection, provision and unity, and finish by declaring the home the Lord’s.

Do this in faith and in your own words. God hears the prayer of His people in their own homes as surely as He hears it anywhere else.

Real stories from house blessings

We share these two accounts — with every personal detail kept private — so you can see what the Lord does when a home is given to Him. They are testimony, not a service we offer: the prayer that changed these homes is the same prayer set out above, and it is yours to pray.

A FLAT SET FREE

We went to pray in a flat where the occupants — a Christian family — were experiencing night terrors and disturbance. We read Scripture, prayed through the rooms, and dedicated the home to the Lord. The disturbance stopped.

A NEW HOME PROTECTED

A lady moved from her old premises into a new home and asked us to come and bless it. We prayed through the house, dedicating it and her household to God, asking for peace and protection over the new season.

Again — this does not apply to everyone, but to certain situations. If you are reading this and something in your home is troubling you, do not carry it alone: speak to your own church, and pray through your home in faith.

Let your home be filled with His Spirit, ruled by His peace, and marked by His love.
