A Biblical Plan for Life and Beyond
From four years old to forty and beyond — what you are building, what may come at you, and why neither one surprises God.
"The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." John 10:10
Read it again. The thief and the abundant life are in the same sentence. Christ never promised a life without storms — He promised life in the middle of them, and then gave us the Helper for exactly that.
One ship. One voyage. No two the same.
It is one ship making one passage, not two roads running side by side. Some stretches the wind is behind you and you are being led. Sometimes you pull into harbour to restock, and that is not lost time. Every now and then a storm turns up and you are tossed to and fro — and then you are back on calm water, still making way, until you reach the destination.
WindLed by the Spirit
The wind speaks of being led by the Holy Spirit. You are not simply drifting with whatever comes; you are learning to recognise His leading and follow where He directs.
There will be seasons when God opens the way, gives direction and carries you forward beyond what you could accomplish in your own strength.
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”Romans 8:14
HarbourRest, receive, rebuild
Harbour is a place of rest and preparation, not wasted time.
There are seasons when God draws you aside to slow down, meditate on His Word, pray, learn and strengthen the foundations of your life. What God builds in you in harbour may be exactly what you will need when the next storm comes.
Rest. Receive. Build on the Word. Then sail again.
StormThe foundation is tested
Storms reveal what your life has been built upon.
Jesus spoke of the house built upon the rock. The rain came, the floods rose and the winds beat against it — but it stood because its foundation was secure.
The storm does not only test you; God can use it to strengthen you — producing perseverance, character, spiritual maturity, mental fortitude and a mind increasingly shaped by Christ.
You come through knowing more deeply what you believe, whom you trust, and what you are standing on.
The goal is not a life without storms, but a life built on the Rock.
Calm waterWalk in what you have learned
Calm water is a season of peace, stability and steady progress.
Use it well. Enjoy God’s peace, practise what you have learned, strengthen relationships, serve others and keep moving forward.
Do not spend calm water fearing another storm. Give thanks for the season you are in and continue the voyage.
No two voyages are the same. The wind, harbour, storm and calm will come at different times and in different orders. So do not measure your journey against someone else’s.
Through every season God is forming something in you — teaching you to follow His Spirit, build upon His Word, stand when tested and continue faithfully towards the destination.
The weather changes. The foundation does not. The destination remains. And Christ is Lord of the whole voyage.

What runs through the whole plan
The road above says when. This says what — always. Whatever point of that road you are standing on, these three are running at the same time. Let one of them go and the other two eventually buckle.
1 · SanctificationWork on yourself
- Know your value in Christ. You were bought at a price.
- The mind of Christ — do not be conformed to this world.
- Self-control, discipline, purity.
- Prayer, fasting, the Bible, worship, fellowship.
- Your body is a temple. Treat it like one.
2 · StewardshipWork on your future
- Education, skills, knowledge. Keep learning.
- A trade, a profession, or a business of your own.
- Goals worth writing down: income, savings, a home.
- Kingdom-smart with money — provide, plan ahead, avoid debt.
- Be generous. What God puts in your hands is never only for you.
3 · Kingdom purposeWork for God
- Prayer, and real dependence on God.
- Serve. Use the gifts you actually have, not the ones you wish you had.
- Share the gospel. Make disciples.
- Support the church and the work of the kingdom.
- Be faithful with one talent and you will be trusted with more.
None of the three waits for the next stage. A nine-year-old can be generous. Someone at seventy is still being sanctified. You do not graduate out of any of them — you just do them with more of your life each year.
Children
Kingdom KidsA word for parents
Bring them, encourage them, and build on what they learn.
Sunday School works best when church and home work together. We will teach your child the Bible, help them know Jesus, pray, ask questions and grow in faith. At home, talk with them about what they learned, read the Bible together and encourage them to put it into practice.
Our aim is simple: to help every child build a strong foundation, know that God loves them and knows them by name, and begin a lifelong walk with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
In these years children are told things and they simply believe them, and that is exactly as it should be. By the end of this stage they can open a Bible and find their way around it on their own.
"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6
That is a promise you can lean on. What goes into a child in these years has a way of still being there long after they have left home.
Church helps lay the foundation. Parents help build upon it.

What's true: God is with you in the dark as much as in the light. He does not leave when things go wrong, and you can tell Him exactly how you feel.

Teens
The temple year, then the workshopThis season
At twelve, Jesus sat in the temple listening to the teachers and asking them questions — and everyone was astonished at His understanding and His answers. Not preaching. Holding His own. That is this season: faith stops being your parents' and becomes yours, and you learn to open your mouth about it.

- Exams, and what everyone expects of you
- Doubt — and thinking you're not allowed to have it
What's true: "Let no one despise your youth." Doubt brought into the light is not a threat to your faith; hidden doubt is. Bring it here.

The decisions you make now shape the next forty years — course, work, money, who you marry, where you land. This is also when most people leave: for university, for a job, for another city. The question is not whether you go. It is whether you go equipped.

- Being treated unfairly at work, and wanting to walk out
- Money that doesn't stretch, and debt that does
- Loneliness nobody can see
What's true: God is not waiting for you to have it worked out. Being led by the Spirit is not a reward for having arrived — it is how you get anywhere at all.

The family business of the gospelThis season
Jesus began His ministry at about thirty. Everything before it was preparation — including eighteen years in a carpenter's shop. If you are here, you are not late. You are on time, and now it is your turn to hand it on.

- Illness — yours, or someone you love
- Bereavement, and grief that doesn't keep to a schedule
- Strain at home, and years that didn't go as planned
- Watching your children walk away from it
- Weariness in doing good
What's true: God declares the end from the beginning. Paul was told every life on that ship would be saved while the ship was still breaking apart.
Not everyone will marry — and that is not a lesser path
Some will never marry, and some will choose not to. Scripture treats that as a gift in its own right, not as something missing.1 Corinthians 7:7, 7:28, 7:32–35 · Matthew 19:11–12
Paul writes that each has his own gift from God, "one in this manner and another in that" — and of marriage he says plainly, "such will have trouble in the flesh, but I would spare you." He is not warning people off marriage; he is being honest that it carries its own hardships, and that the unmarried can serve the Lord without distraction.
Christ said the same of those who stay single for the kingdom: "He who is able to accept it, let him accept it."

When the storm comes
This is not a chapter at the end. It runs the length of the passage, because it always has. Abundant life was never the absence of storms.

Staying on the path
Not rules to earn anything — God’s favour was never for sale. These are simply the things that, left unguarded, quietly take people off the road.
- Avoid sexual immorality. It costs far more than it ever offers.
- Stay away from godless company and bad influence.
- The way of sin is enticing, and it destroys.
- Darkness leads to destruction, however well lit it looks.
- Choose life. It is the road that leads to blessing.
“Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established.”
Proverbs 16:3Commit the works first. The clear thinking follows the committing, not the other way round.
Your life is not just about you — it is about God’s purpose through you.
Work on yourself. Work on your future. Work for God.
