When you are the only Christian

The only one in your family, your class, or on your shift.

Before any of it

You were not left to manage this on your own

Everything here rests on one thing, and it is not your strength. Before Christ went to the cross He promised He would not leave us as orphans, and He sent the Comforter to help us during these difficult times. Not afterwards. During.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:26–27

He is not a reward for coping well. He is not sent once you are strong enough to deserve Him. If you belong to Christ, the everyday Helper is already with you and already in you, and the first move in any hard season is to turn to Him before you turn to a plan.

Standing alone

The only Christian in your family. In your class. On your shift. You are not being persecuted exactly, it is quieter than that. You are just always the odd one, and it is wearing.

What is true

Being the only one in the room is not a sign you are in the wrong room. It is very often the reason you are in it.

And you are not actually alone in it. The Helper is with you in that room. He does not wait outside the places where nobody else believes.

“Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12

Someone here has done this

“I had to attend a school event that I really didn’t want to go to because the atmosphere was not something I was comfortable with. Despite my reluctance, I went and decided to be a light in a dark place… One person decided to give his life to Jesus after we spoke. This experience showed me that even when we don’t want to be somewhere, God can use us.”

How to stand it

  1. Ask the Helper to go in with you. Before the shift, before the classroom, before the family meal. You are not walking in there by yourself.
  2. You do not have to win the argument. You have to be there and be different. That is the whole assignment.
  3. Do not underestimate your own story. You may think it is not significant. It is the most personal and powerful thing you have.
  4. Come back and tell the church. Standing alone all week is survivable if you are not alone on Sunday.

If it is something else today

And when you speak to someone

Who to tell

These pages keep saying tell someone. That does not mean tell anyone. It matters who you take it to, and Scripture qualifies who those people are: of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom (Acts 6:3).

Look for a brother or sister in Christ who has history with God, a good testimony among the people, and the discretion to keep a confidence. Not a group chat, and not social media.

And if you have nobody and no church at all, you are not outside God’s provision. Christ Himself gave the church, and it is the same Spirit who comforts you who appointed those who shepherd it. Ask Him to lead you to His people, and keep asking.
